Jericho [2020]

Bas-relief in salvaged wood, 184 x 153 x 15cm

This contorted shape of a decaying tree trunk, photographed in the Yosemite valley in California, was the subject for the work Holocene in 2013. Six years on it served as a template for Jericho. A work that like Holocene is also to be understood in relation to time, the title referencing the 10.000 year old tower of Jericho on the West Bank of the river Jordan that resembles a massive fossilized tree trunk. The tower is by far the oldest man-made monumental structure we know of. According to new insights it helped facilitate the transition to agriculture and the Neolithic revolution in the Levant (Barkai, R., & Liran, R, [2008]. Midsummer Sunset at Neolithic Jericho. University of Tel Aviv. Link: pdf ). This would make it a marker for the start of the process towards human hegemony of the earth, a process that is now reaching a critical phase.

Garuda [2021]

Bas-relief in salvaged wood, 239 x 194 x 15cm
(private collection, Delft, Netherlands)

The subject for Garuda is a private jet, type Cessna Mustang. It is a very light, entry level business jet. The title of the work refers to a mythical creature who plays an important role in various Eastern religions, such as Buddhism, Hinduism and Jainism. Garuda is on the national coats of arms of India, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia and Indonesia. The national airline of Indonesia is also called Garuda. In the Mahabharata, Garuda is presented as the symbol of impetuous force, speed and courage. Garuda is half human and half bird, often shrouded in flames. In preparation of the work, Van der Ende collected many images of paintings, prints and sculptures of Garuda and the Cessna Mustang. The mosaic of the bas-relief is based on a Tibetan mural.

Val Tremola [2021]

Bas-relief in salvaged wood, 182 diameter x 14cm

Val Tremola is the second work in a series of circular bas-reliefs depicting alpine landscapes. It shows the hairpin bends of the Tremola Valley that are part of the old Gotthard Pass route. One of the highest paved roads in Europe, it used to be a busy connection until the Gotthard Road Tunnel opened in 1980. It is preserved as a monument appearing today as it was in 1951.
The Val Tremola relief was based on vintage postcards and constructed using salvaged wood, utilizing the worn and weathered character of the surfaces to emulate the terrain.
