Ron van der Ende. Born in Delft, NL, 1965. Lives and works in Rotterdam, the Netherlands

Wall mounted bas-relief sculptures made from found wood, constructed by hand by Rotterdam based artist Ron van der Ende. By using the color and texture of the aged materials and by painstakingly rendering the perspective he conjures up artifacts from the collective subconscious, of outdated tech and symbols of stalled futures.

Works by Ron van der Ende have been exhibited a.o. in Delta Gallery in Rotterdam, Ambach & Rice Gallery in Seattle and Los Angeles and in Ron Mandos Gallery in Amsterdam, Groninger Museum; Museum Voorlinden, Wassenaar; Kunsthal Rotterdam and the Ludwig Forum in Aachen; KunstRai Amsterdam, Art Colgne, Art Frankfurt , Art Basel, NADA Miami Beach, Dallas Art Fair, Expo Chicago and The Armory Show in New York.

RON VAN DER ENDE: ALLUVIAL PLAIN
25 Years of Galerie Ron Mandos – a Final Celebration
With Geert Mul, Renie Spoelstra & Ron van der Ende
23.11.2024 – 05.01.2025

Alluvial Plain is my third exhibition at Ron Mandos gallery and the first presentation where I put landscapes centre stage. An alluvial plain is land created by rivers by the deposition of sediment over a long time period,. The Netherlands were shaped this way. It is the original state of our environment.
This body of work emerged over a span of 4 years and it covers some shifts in focus and perspective. In all we show fourteen intricate bas-reliefs that deal with our relationship to landscape. Jericho, the tree trunk, is the oldest work. It is intended as a visual exploration of pre-historic time and the violent rise of mankind. The latest works are two small tidal landscapes that offer a glimpse of the return to a natural equilibrium in the far away future.

My interest in tidal landscapes arose some years ago when I learned about a large nature reserve called De Beer which was close to where I grew up. I had not heard about it before because the area had been transformed into the largest port in the world, in the decade before I was born. While investigating this lost landscape, I learned that De Beer was formerly a ‘crown domain’ and that my grandfather, Pieter van der Ende, was a beater for hunting parties organized for the royals Prince Hendrik, and later Prince Bernhard. While searching for the remnants of similar coastal landscapes in the Netherlands, I found only a few. To the south of Rotterdam, there is De Kwaaie Hoek, on the island of Texel there is De Slufter, and on the border of the Netherlands and Belgium, Het Zwin. If you visit these places, and the weather turns bad, you can get a feeling of what this country must have been like before humans adapted it to their needs.
There is a very small park called De Kleine Beer in the middle of the Port of Rotterdam that is not open to the public. A function of this ‘Small Bear’ is to serve as a repository for the original plant life so that it may one day get a chance to reclaim its rightful place.
